What Is The Oloolu Masquerade?
For those who don’t know, the Oloolu Masquerade is the most feared and revered ancestral war masquerade in Ibadanland.
* The Dreaded Rule: Traditional customs strictly forbid ANY woman from seeing or recording the Oloolu.
* The Skull: The top of the Oloolu costume carries a real female human skull—the skull of a woman historically beheaded by the warrior Ayorinde Aje.
* The Curse: Ancient tradition holds that if a woman stares at Oloolu, she will face severe health complications, miss her menstruation, bleed continuously, or even die.
THE INCIDENT: Driven By TikTok "Views"
Before the annual procession held between July 27 and 30, the Olubadan of Ibadanland issued strong warnings to residents strictly forbidding filming, taking pictures, or women coming out.
However, looking for social media content and TikTok views, Wasilat (in her early 20s) reportedly disguised herself as a man to sneak into the Oremeji area and secretly film the procession. She later uploaded the footage to her TikTok page.
THE AFTERMATH: Continuous Bleeding & The Sacrifice
Shortly after posting the video, Wasilat reportedly began to experience severe, unexplainable, and continuous bleeding. In extreme distress, her family rushed her to security operatives and traditional custodians at the Oloolu Compound to beg for mercy.
To save her life, she had to undergo intense traditional cleansing and appeasement rites:
1. Her head was completely shaved by her mother.
2. She was made to carry a sacrificial goat to appease the deities.
3. She had to wear a spiritual necklace made of snail shells.
IS SHE DEAD OR ALIVE? (The Big Reveal)
Many bloggers and pages are posting that Wasilat passed away because the rituals failed. THIS IS FALSE! ❌
According to reliable local sources and community representatives from the Oloolu compound, Wasilat survived the ordeal. Following the completion of the traditional cleansing rites, her health stabilized, the continuous bleeding stopped, and she is currently recovering with her family. The death rumors were simply fabricated by blogs to gain cheap clicks.
