BREAKING: NO MORE "DR." FOR HONORARY DOCTORS – FG CRACKS DOWN!

Busybody Family, if you were planning to add "Dr." to your name after a small donation to a university, you better think again! The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission (NUC), has officially ended the "title craze" in Nigeria. Here is the full update as of Wednesday, May 6, 2026:

The biggest shocker? The "Dr." title is now strictly reserved for those who actually sweated for it, holders of earned academic PhDs and certified medical practitioners.

The Rule: Recipients of honorary degrees are forbidden from using "Dr." as a prefix before their names. 

The Correct Way: Instead, they must use post-nominal letters like D.Sc (Honoris Causa) or D.Litt (h.c.) after their names to show it was an honor, not a qualification.  

President Tinubu's government has officially banned universities from awarding honorary doctorates to serving public officials, whether elected or appointed. 

Why? The NUC says awarding these titles to people in power suggests a "potential motive" for favors in return.

The "Keffi Declaration": This move finally gives legal "executive backing" to the 2012 Keffi Declaration, which many universities have been ignoring for years. 

The NUC investigation has identified 32 institutions (both local and foreign) acting as "honorary degree mills" basically shops where you can buy a title for a fee. 

No "Pay-to-Play": Honorary degrees must now be strictly free and based on merit alone. No more "donations" in exchange for a gown!. 

Universities are now limited to awarding a maximum of three honorary degrees per convocation ceremony to prevent "indiscriminate conferment". 

Mature Institutions Only: Only universities that have successfully graduated their first set of PhD students are now allowed to award honorary degrees.
